How this is computed

Compiled by Radif Partners · How costs are estimated · Tennessee technician wages, May 2025 · not a quote

Tennessee technicians earned a mean $26.25 an hour in May 2025, a little under the $27.13 national mean, so the shop rate scaled from their pay is a typical $130 an hour, with the middle half of posted rates between $111 and $154. Ranked from the cheapest, Tennessee is 21st of 51 jurisdictions. A timing belt on an SUV, mostly labor, comes to about $597 against $611 at the national rate, and a synthetic oil change on a sedan to about $95 against $97. A wheel alignment on a pickup, which is all labor, is about $78. The state's rules then work in opposite directions: the last county emissions programs ended in 2021, so no test forces a repair before renewal, but the sales tax reaches the full repair charge, labor included, with the local rate added.

A shop rate slightly under the middle

About 16,200 automotive technicians work in Tennessee according to the May wage survey of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, earning 3 % less than the national mean. The site applies that ratio to the national band of posted rates, whose middle is $134; it has no survey of Tennessee shops of its own. The result is a band only a few dollars under the national one. A shop in Nashville may post above it, and a shop in a rural county below it; read the figure as a starting point.

Labor carries sales tax

Tennessee treats the repair of any tangible personal property, cars included, as taxable in full. Parts and labor are both taxed, and the tax applies even to a job where no part is fitted, such as a wheel alignment (Tennessee Department of Revenue rule 1320-05-01-.54). Local tax comes on top of the state rate. In practice, the split between parts and labor on the invoice does not change what you owe in tax, unlike in the many states that exempt separated labor.

That makes the hours on a quote doubly worth checking: each hour adds the shop rate and the tax on it. A timing belt or a head gasket, where the automaker allows several hours, is where the tax on labor weighs most. The quote checker compares the hours on your quote with the times the automakers pay their own dealers, before tax.

No inspection of any kind

Tennessee has no periodic safety inspection for passenger vehicles. The emissions tests that once applied around Nashville and Chattanooga are gone too: the federal EPA approved the removal of the program for Davidson, Sumner, Rutherford, Williamson, Wilson and Hamilton counties in a rule effective September 16, 2021, and Shelby County, around Memphis, ended its own in 2016 (Federal Register, approval of the Tennessee program removal). No failed test pushes an owner toward the shop, so the timing of a repair is the owner's choice.

A replacement catalytic converter can be a federal EPA-compliant unit, since Tennessee has not adopted the California standard (U.S. EPA policy on aftermarket converters). Neighboring states differ on several of these points; the comparison of all states ranks them for any repair.

Questions drivers ask

Is repair labor taxed in Tennessee even with no parts?

Yes. Tennessee taxes all charges for repairing tangible personal property, which includes vehicles, and the rule applies to the labor even when the job uses no parts at all. An alignment or a labor-only job is therefore taxed like a parts-heavy one. Local sales tax is added to the state rate, so plan for both on top of the estimates.

Does Tennessee require emissions testing in 2026?

No. The federal EPA approved removing the vehicle inspection program for Davidson, Sumner, Rutherford, Williamson, Wilson and Hamilton counties in a rule that took effect on September 16, 2021, and Shelby County ended its program in 2016. Tennessee has no periodic safety inspection for passenger cars either, so no test is due before registration.

Why is a Tennessee alignment taxed when it has no parts?

Because the state rule taxes the charge for repair services as such, not only the property sold. An alignment is pure labor, and in Tennessee that labor is taxable at the state rate plus the local one. In states that exempt separately stated labor, the same alignment would carry no sales tax at all.
