How this is computed

Compiled by Radif Partners · How costs are estimated · Missouri technician wages, May 2025 · not a quote

Missouri technicians earned a mean $25.94 an hour in May 2025, under the national $27.13, and the shop rate scaled from that wage is a typical $129 an hour, with the middle half of posted rates between $109 and $152. Ranked from the cheapest, the state is 16th of 51 jurisdictions. A catalytic converter on an SUV comes to about $543 against $554 at the national rate, and front pads and rotors on a pickup to about $290 against $294. A water pump on a sedan is about $218. Missouri keeps a safety inspection every two years for cars past the exemption, tests emissions in the St. Louis area, has no statute written for repair estimates and leaves separated labor out of the sales tax.

A rate below the national middle

The Bureau of Labor Statistics wage survey counts about 17,200 automotive technicians in Missouri, earning 4 % less than the national mean. The site scales the national band of posted rates, whose middle is $134, by that ratio, without a survey of Missouri shops. Kansas City and St. Louis shops may post above the band, small-town shops in the Ozarks below it. When you know your shop's rate, put it in the estimator.

The safety inspection is still the law

Missouri's statute still requires a safety inspection every two years, timed by model year: even model years in even calendar years, odd ones in odd years (Revised Statutes of Missouri, section 307.350). A vehicle within ten years of its model year and with fewer than 150,000 miles is exempt, as are historic vehicles and a few other categories. In practice, older or high-mileage cars are the ones that go through the check. The pads and rotors page prices that common case for every vehicle type.

The Gateway Vehicle Inspection Program adds an onboard diagnostic emissions test for 1996 and newer vehicles in the City of St. Louis and in St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson and Franklin counties. A federal EPA-compliant converter is acceptable in Missouri, since the state has not adopted the California standard (U.S. EPA aftermarket converter policy).

No repair act: get it in writing yourself

Missouri has no law written for auto repair estimates. Shops answer only to the general ban on deception and unfair practices in the Merchandising Practices Act (Revised Statutes of Missouri, section 407.020), which sets no threshold, no overrun margin and no consent rule. That leaves the paperwork to you. Ask for a written estimate with the hours, the rate and each part, say that any extra work needs your approval first, and keep the paper. The estimate checker then reads each line against the Missouri band.

Sales tax on the bill

Repair labor stated apart from the parts is not taxable in Missouri. If the invoice lumps everything together, the whole price is taxed, unless the parts make up less than 10 % of the total (Missouri Code of State Regulations, 12 CSR 10-103.600). An itemized invoice keeps the tax on the parts alone.

Questions drivers ask

Which Missouri cars are exempt from the safety inspection?

A vehicle within ten years of its model year that has fewer than 150,000 miles is exempt, along with historic vehicles and a few other categories. Other vehicles are inspected every two years, with even model years due in even calendar years and odd model years in odd ones. The requirement is in the current statute and has not been repealed.

Where does Missouri test vehicle emissions?

In the St. Louis area only. The Gateway Vehicle Inspection Program runs an onboard diagnostic test on 1996 and newer vehicles registered in the City of St. Louis and in St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson and Franklin counties. Vehicles elsewhere in Missouri have no emissions test, though they may still need the safety inspection.

Is labor taxed on a Missouri invoice that does not split parts?

Usually, yes. Missouri exempts repair labor only when it is stated separately from the parts. If the shop charges a single price, the whole amount is taxable, unless the parts account for less than 10 % of the total. Asking for an itemized invoice is the simple way to keep the labor out of the tax.
