Car repair costs in Indiana: shop rates, labor and parts
Indiana's overrun rule only bites on bigger jobs, those above $750, which is where a written figure from the shop matters most.

Compiled by Radif Partners · How costs are estimated · Indiana technician wages, May 2025 · not a quote
Indiana technicians earned a mean $25.82 an hour in May 2025, below the $27.13 national mean, so the shop rate scaled from their pay is a typical $128 an hour, the middle half of posted rates falling between $109 and $151. Counted from the cheapest, the state is 14th of 51 jurisdictions. Labor-heavy jobs show the saving best: swapping a pickup transmission takes about $1,132 of labor here against $1,189 at the national rate, the unit itself extra, and a head gasket on an SUV about $1,665 against $1,739. Front pads on a sedan come to about $108. The Deceptive Consumer Sales Act makes it a deceptive act to run 10 % or more past an estimate without written permission once the whole job tops $750, and separately stated labor carries no sales tax.
How the Indiana rate is built
About 16,500 automotive technicians work in Indiana, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, earning 5 % less than the national mean. The site scales the national band of posted shop rates, which centers on $134, by that ratio. Nobody counted Indiana shops one by one: a shop in suburban Indianapolis and one in a farm county can post quite different rates, so use the band as a yardstick and enter your own shop's rate if you know it.

The $750 line in the consumer sales act
Indiana has no separate repair shop statute; its rules sit inside the Deceptive Consumer Sales Act (Indiana Code, title 24). No provision obliges every shop to write an estimate. What the act does is treat certain shop behavior as deceptive. Going over an estimate by 10 % or more without your written permission is one of them, when the whole transaction, parts and services together, is above $750 and the shop knew or should have known the cost would run higher. Doing work you did not authorize is another.
The $750 figure is not a written estimate threshold; it marks the size of job the overrun rule covers. At the Indiana rate, a pickup transmission swap, at about $1,132 of labor, is above it, while front pads on a sedan, at about $108, are below it. On a big job, ask for the estimate in writing and give any added work in writing too. The transmission page explains why the unit itself is left out.
Old parts and the 72 hours
The act gives you no right to take the replaced parts home. It does make it deceptive for a shop to claim a repair was needed and then throw away the old part within 72 hours of telling you the work is done and making the part available for you to examine. If you doubt a repair, ask to see the part promptly. The estimate checker helps you weigh the hours billed against the automaker's times.
Emissions and tax
No periodic safety inspection applies to Indiana passenger cars. Emissions testing, called Clean Air Car Check, is limited to Lake and Porter counties in the northwest, for model year 1976 and newer light and medium vehicles (Indiana Administrative Code, 326 IAC 13-1.1-2). Parts carry the 7 % state sales tax; repair labor stated separately does not (Indiana Code, title 6).
