How this is computed

Compiled by Radif Partners · How costs are estimated · Colorado technician wages, May 2025 · not a quote

A Colorado repair shop charges a typical $152 an hour, with the middle half of shops between $130 and $180, because automotive technicians there earn a mean $30.76 an hour against $27.13 nationally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics for May 2025. That puts Colorado 4th highest of the 50 states and the District of Columbia on that measure. Front brake pads on an SUV come to about $175, a head gasket on the same SUV to about $1,944, against $1,739 at the national rate. The catalytic converter is where Colorado stands apart: since 2021 a replacement must be approved by the California Air Resources Board, so an SUV converter comes to about $1,227 instead of $589 with a federal one.

What a repair costs in Colorado

The labor time of a repair does not depend on the state; the hourly rate does. Colorado's technicians earn about 13 % more than the national mean, and the federal wage survey counts about 12,300 of them in the state. Scaled by that wage, the national band of posted shop rates becomes $130 to $180 an hour in Colorado. The table at the bottom of this page applies that rate to every repair priced on the site, and the estimator above lets you type the rate of your own shop if you know it.

The converter rule

Colorado's Air Quality Control Commission adopted California's standard for aftermarket catalytic converters. Since January 1, 2021, a replacement converter sold or installed in the state, for a car of any model year, must be the automaker's own part or a new aftermarket unit approved by the California Air Resources Board; used and salvaged converters are not allowed (state health department). CARB-approved units cost more, which is why the estimator opens on them here. The converter page explains the difference.

Your rights at the shop

The Colorado Motor Vehicle Repair Act requires a written estimate before work starts, unless you sign a waiver in the form the law sets out, and limits what a shop can add without your further consent: the estimate plus 10 % or $25, whichever is less (Colorado Revised Statutes, title 42). You can ask, when you authorize the repair, for the replaced parts to be returned. Those three rules make the quote checker useful before you sign: an estimate with the hours, the rate and the parts on separate lines is easy to read.

Inspections and taxes

Colorado has no periodic safety inspection for passenger cars. Gasoline vehicles registered in the Denver metro and North Front Range area must pass an emissions test, every two years for most models, which can lead to repairs on an older car (emissions program). Repair labor that is stated separately on the invoice is not subject to Colorado sales tax, while parts are (state sales tax guide).

On a long job such as a head gasket, the Colorado rate adds about $205 to the national figure for an SUV. The state comparison ranks Colorado against every other state for any repair.

Questions drivers ask

How much do Colorado mechanics charge per hour?

Scaled by the mean wage of Colorado technicians, $30.76 an hour in May 2025, the typical posted rate is about $152 an hour and the middle half of shops sits between $130 and $180. A dealer, a specialist or a shop with high rent can post more than that band, and some shops post less.

Do I need a CARB catalytic converter in Colorado?

Yes. Since January 1, 2021, any aftermarket catalytic converter sold or installed in Colorado must be a new unit approved by the California Air Resources Board, or the automaker's own part, whatever the model year of the car. Used or salvaged converters are not allowed. A converter still under the emissions warranty is replaced by the automaker.

Can a Colorado shop charge more than its estimate?

Only a little without asking you. Under the Motor Vehicle Repair Act, the shop may charge at most the estimate plus 10 % or $25, whichever is less, unless you consent to more. If it goes beyond that without consent, it must release the car on payment of the allowed amount. Get the estimate in writing before work starts.
