Car repair costs in Illinois: shop rates, labor and parts

Illinois sits almost exactly on the national middle for shop rates, and its Automotive Repair Act treats an itemized estimate differently from a single total price.

How this is computed

Compiled by Radif Partners · How costs are estimated · Illinois technician wages, May 2025 · not a quote

Illinois technicians earned a mean $27.25 an hour in May 2025, a hair above the national $27.13, so the posted shop rate scaled from that wage is about $135 an hour, practically the national $134, with a band of $115 to $160. On that measure the state is 20th highest of 51 jurisdictions. A water pump on an SUV comes to about $193 against $192 at the national rate, and a starter on a sedan about $239 against $238; a sedan battery is about $236 fitted. Those near-identical pairs mean the national cost pages on this site already describe Illinois well. What is specific to the state is the paperwork: from $100 you are entitled to a written estimate, and how far the final bill may drift from it depends on whether the estimate breaks out parts and labor.

A rate at the national middle

About 29,500 automotive technicians work in Illinois according to the federal wage survey, and their mean pay is within 0.4 % of the national figure. Because the site scales the national band of posted rates by that wage ratio, the Illinois band is almost the national one. The average blends two different markets: shops in Chicago and its collar counties may face higher costs than those downstate, so treat the band as the statewide middle rather than your neighborhood price. The simulator below runs a single repair through every state for comparison.

The written estimate from $100

Under the Illinois Automotive Repair Act, a repair expected to cost $100 or more entitles you to a written estimate, unless you waive it or never deal with the shop face to face. The Act leaves out collision work, jobs under that amount, and merchandise installed at a firm price without any diagnosis(Illinois Attorney General, Automotive Repair Act).

The detail that matters most is the form of the estimate. If it is itemized, with parts and labor on separate lines, the shop may go up to 10 % over it without asking; beyond that it needs your oral or written approval. If it only gives one total price, the shop may not exceed it at all without approval. An itemized estimate is easier to check, and the estimate checker needs exactly those lines: hours, rate and parts. The Attorney General's office takes complaints under the Act.

Emissions testing in two regions

Emissions testing applies only to vehicles registered in the Chicago area and in the Metro-East region near St. Louis, the two areas that do not meet the federal ozone standard (Illinois EPA, vehicle emissions testing). A car registered elsewhere in the state is not tested. For the national context of the hourly rate, see mechanic labor rates.

Questions drivers ask

When does an Illinois shop owe me a written estimate?

When the repair is expected to cost $100 or more and you deal with the shop in person. You can waive the estimate, and the Act does not cover collision repairs, jobs under $100, or a part installed at a firm price without diagnosis. Ask for the estimate to be itemized, since that changes how much the bill may grow.

How much over the estimate can an Illinois mechanic charge?

It depends on the estimate. With an itemized estimate that separates parts and labor, the shop may exceed it by up to 10 % without asking; anything more needs your oral or written authorization. With a single total price that is not itemized, it may not exceed the estimate at all unless you authorize the extra amount.

Where in Illinois do cars need an emissions test?

Only in the Chicago area and the Metro-East area across the river from St. Louis, the parts of the state that do not meet the federal ozone standard. Vehicles registered elsewhere in Illinois are not tested. The Illinois EPA runs the program and its emissions testing pages say which vehicles must be tested and how often.

These are estimates built from the time automakers allow for each job, the wages of technicians in each state and parts prices read on a given day, not a quote: only a mechanic who has seen the car knows what it needs. The site sells no repair, part, warranty or loan and earns nothing from any shop.
